From Pain to Promise: Why Roots to Rise Was Founded
Meet the Founder
Roots to Rise Foundation was born from pain, promise, faith, and purpose.
For years, Demetras Douglas served within the community and saw families struggling because they lacked education around life insurance, health insurance, Medicare, and financial preparedness. She saw people forced to make life-changing decisions without the knowledge, resources, or support they needed.
In 2009, Demetras lost her husband, who passed away without life insurance. That experience revealed how quickly one family’s foundation can be shaken when protection and planning are missing.
In 2010, her mother was diagnosed with stage four breast cancer, with only a 20% chance in her favor. In that moment, Demetras did not understand Medicare or how to navigate the healthcare system. She remembers not knowing whether to pray, cry, or learn everything she could to help her mother.
She prayed to God and made a promise: If He allowed her mother to live, she would serve His people.
In 2011, her youngest child was diagnosed at only five years old with an early-onset chronic disease. Once again, she found herself at the throne of grace, asking God for help. And once again, she promised that if He brought her through, she would serve His people.
Today, Demetras stands ten toes down in that promise. Roots to Rise Foundation was created with the intent to serve. Everything starts with the foundation. The roots are essential. The rise happens through education, access, support, and opportunity.
This is more than a nonprofit. It is purpose in motion.
